Geek or Nerd

Okay I've been noticing that some people are calling geeks, nerds now for some reason eventhough the concept is quite different. There's a thin line that separates geeks and nerds. One may be in one category, or both, but one does not simply say they are the same thing.

(Hah, I just quoted LOTR with a Vocaloid picture reference)

*ahem* anyways, it's getting quite annoying how "nerds and geeks" are getting "mainstream", "accepted into community" and considered as "the new sexy". Yeah.......no. People, hot girls wearing glassless, big-rim spectacle and hot guys acting sexily geekish with gadgets on their hand are neither a nerd nor a geek. Those are what we call "hipsters".

So now we have three terms. What are hipsters? They're hotties who get away with stealing geeky style because they're well, hot, and pretending to be nerds. Most are not even relatively smart. Just simply being admired because of their flawless skin and charming eyes and all that. I think I said earlier that I don't wanna be a hater to anything and prefer it if I stay in the neutral zone, but I disprefer hipsters, personally. Because they're spoilt with riches, living in a delusional world where they're philosophical and deep while admiring talentless artists with obvious douchebaggery symptoms because "they look hot".

Basically
So enough about hipsters. Lets start with the geek/nerd war. Nerds are people who loves academic, is passionate about it and often top scorers in their class because of their interest in it. Nerds may pay high attention concerning his or her education and plan their time systematically. Nerds may have difficulties being social with everyone else due to their amount of time spent deep in their work and may develop low self esteem. Stereotypically, nerds are described as wearing glasses, having pimples and their sense of style is considered as just following the rulebook. Due to their high intelligence, they may either look down on commoners for being less-intelligent or shy away from them due to commoners' tendency to make fun of their passion in serious things. These people have high potentials to be successful, as long as they learn how to adapt and use their intelligence to good use.

Geeks are people who are passionate in things that are fictional. The existence of geeks may be because of the fact that he or she is not living well in the real world, pushing them into entering "fandoms" of fictional worlds such as Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Star Trek and such. They have very high imagination and tends to abandon reality world most of the time. "Otaku" is a variation of geeks that is focused on mainly Japanese-related productions such as anime, tokusatsu shows, and such. The level of geekiness may vary from person to person but beware for there are hipsters that is known to be low-level geeks. The level is measured by how much they know and how obsessed they are with their fandoms. One may decide to be dedicated to just one fandom but it is common nowadays for people to jump into many fandoms at once.

Now they sounds quite different, don't you think? Though they do have plenty of similarities. Both categories' shy away from socializing except among themselves due to their different way of living. Both may have low self esteem due to being physically unfit (may it be fat or skinny) since they spent most of their time indoor doing things they're passionate about. Both are social-outcasts and considered as special.

You may realise that the amount of geeks is increasing in size probably due to the increasing facilities in watching tv-shows or reading books but true geeks are still quite hard to find.

Well I guess that's it for me to explain. Kinda too lazy to make a seriously long and elaborate explanation and comparison of the different clans complete with table, pictures and all but I guess I'm done ranting here. Oh and here

In case you're wondering, I'm more of a geek, I mean, a SERIOUS geek that read, watch shows, an otaku, a gamer, and I'm in a lot of fandoms but I'm used to being called as a nerd due to my errr.....higher-than-average result in academic-related stuffs and my involvement in them. Ciao
